A new chapter is taking shape for older persons in Kisumu.
The first collection of handwoven baskets made by older persons participating in Ethel Foundation for the Aged (EFA)’s livelihood activities in Kisumu is now ready for order.
Each basket represents more than a finished product. It represents skill, effort, creativity, purpose and an opportunity for older persons to strengthen their livelihoods with dignity.
Through EFA’s livelihood and social support programming, older persons are supported to participate in income-generating activities that build on their existing skills and experience. Basket weaving provides an opportunity for participants to turn their knowledge and craftsmanship into products that can access local markets.
The baskets are individually crafted, making each piece unique. By choosing to purchase one, customers are not simply acquiring a beautiful handmade product—they are contributing to an approach that recognizes older persons as active contributors, producers and holders of valuable skills, rather than simply recipients of support.
